Here in New York, the September weather was positively summery almost until the end of the month. Then, as if on cue, the weather became cooler when the calendar proclaimed the first day of fall. It has also been rainy for the past few days. Perfect weather for shopping indoors.
So, I’ve been browsing the websites of a few of my favorite brands. Mindful of seasonal trends, I am looking for what would work with—and give an updated look to—what’s already in my closet.
A new turtleneck sweater was first on the list. It pairs well with the tartan plaid Ralph Lauren blazer I bought a dozen years ago. Turning once again to RL, I found one on Macy’s website. The long-sleeve top in Classic Carmel is a soft cotton blend with a silky feel.

Another fall trend that caught my eye is the timeless leopard print. It’s “new” again. Does it really ever go out of style? is anything in leopard print. Whether worn as an accent piece, like a scarf, or more prominently, it never goes out of style. With a closet full of black suit jackets and blazers, I opted for a top to brighten up the black with just enough of the print peeking out. This Maris Printed Halter Top from Alice & Olivia fits the bill.

I purchased my first pair of ballet flats this summer (had to believe I resisted so long) and got a lot of wear out of them. They complemented my summer outfits and were so easy to pack for overnight and weekend trips. I liked them so much that for fall I ordered a pair in suede. I’m thinking of pairing them with a new suede bag, so popular this season.

A trend I’m loving this season is the chunky loafers. Not only do they add some height, they are comfortable and just the right shoe for my dress lacks. The Leah Loafer shown here is from Coach.
Here are some ideas for updating your own fall wardrobe.
- Invest in some quality outerwear. A good jacket or coat is essential. They keep you warm and stylish during the cooler months. Look for classic styles like a trench coat or a leather jacket that can be dressed up or down.
- Add some cozy sweaters: Sweaters are a staple of fall fashion and come in a variety of styles and colors. From chunky knits to lightweight cashmere, there’s a sweater for every occasion. Pair them with jeans for a casual look or dress them up with a skirt and boots.
- Incorporate fall colors: Rich oranges, deep browns, and warm neutrals are all on-trend for fall. Adding pieces in these colors to your wardrobe can instantly give your look a seasonal update.
- Mix in some autumn accessories. Scarves, hats, and gloves are not only practical for keeping warm. They can also add a pop of style to your outfits. Look for cozy scarves in plaid or animal prints, knit beanies, and leather gloves to complete your fall look.
- Don’t forget about footwear: Boots are a fall essential and come in a variety of styles from ankle boots to knee-highs. Invest in a pair of versatile boots that you can wear with both casual and dressier outfits.
Updating your fall wardrobe doesn’t have to be a daunting task. Add a few key pieces in on-trend colors and styles. You can then create stylish and cozy outfits for the season ahead. So embrace the changing season and give your wardrobe a fall refresh.
