A visit to the Old Westbury Gardens was the perfect respite after a grueling work week. At this time of year, the former Phipps family mansion is transformed. Rooms are adorned with poinsettias, ornaments and evergreen, making it the perfect backdrop for a self-guided tour. I’ve toured the house numerous times in the spring and summer. Seeing it all decked out for the holidays is something else. From people snapping photos to children meeting Santa, the atmosphere was joyful.

The fireplace in the entryway was resplendent.

The magnificent winding staircase was extra-beautiful.

Another of the home’s 22 fireplaces.

The most whimsically decorated the home’s 17 bathrooms.

We were treated to a recital by The Long Island Flute Choir Concert. The sounds of flutes playing holiday classics was the something special and a popular event –every seat was taken. After the recital ended, the musicians paid a visit to Santa who, along with a few of his elves, was granting Christmas wishes in the adjoining room.
