National Book Lovers Day: Celebrating the Magic of Reading

From a young age, reading has been one of my greatest passions. Books opened entire worlds to me, offering adventures, friendships, and lessons that profoundly shaped who I am. I could spend endless hours with a book in hand, completely absorbed in the stories and characters I cherished.

One of my fondest memories is discovering a brand-new book. I loved doing book reports, and in junior high I remember traveling into the city to participate in a book talk on the radio for teens.

I loved history, biographies, and fiction equally. Like many young women of the time, I had the complete set of Nancy Drew books and was inspired by The Hidden Staircase to search for one in my grandparents’ large Philadelphia townhouse. I had Barbie books too. The excitement of turning each page and getting lost in Barbie’s glamorous adventures was pure magic. Through those stories, I learned about creativity, friendship, and the joy of imagination. Each book was like a special friend, always waiting for me to return, and that still holds true today.

Reflecting on how reading has shaped me, I realize my love of books influenced my life in countless ways. It sparked my curiosity, helped me see the world from different perspectives, and fueled my dreams. Even now, I cherish the time spent reading, always grateful for the way books shaped my childhood and continue to inspire me.

On National Book Lovers Day, I can’t help but reflect on my new favorite read: Let’s Call Her Barbie. This captivating book not only evokes a bygone era but also deepens my appreciation for the creative minds behind the iconic doll—Ruth Handler and Jack Ryan. Their combined genius brought Barbie to life, transforming her from an idea into my favorite childhood toy. Reading about the inspiration, innovation, and cultural impact of Barbie made me nostalgic for simpler times and grateful for the imagination that shaped such an enduring symbol. Let’s Call Her Barbie is a must-read for anyone who cherishes both books and beloved childhood memories.
