My day job has been relentless lately, so having a rare day to myself felt like an unexpected gift. After knocking out a few pressing errands, I slipped into one of my favorite places — Bloomingdale’s — and immediately felt my shoulders drop. It was so enjoyable to wander through the new spring clothes, especially after one of the coldest, snowiest winters we’ve had in years. Just seeing lighter fabrics and softer colors made me think of warmer days ahead.
I treated myself to a pair of Badgley Mischka sandals, the kind that practically whisper spring is coming. Then I drifted toward the perfume and cologne counters — my natural habitat. I’ve always loved scent; my dresser is crowded with bottles, and I change my fragrances seasonally. Sampling and writing about perfume is one of those small joys that makes me feel like myself again.

There’s a cart of beautiful cologne bottles I’ve passed by at Bloomingdale’s countless times, always intending to stop. Today I finally did, and I’m so glad. The bottles were gorgeous, and as I quickly learned, the scents were just as intriguing. Olivia, the young woman at the MEMO PARIS counter, was wonderfully knowledgeable and generous with her time. When she asked what notes I gravitate toward, I immediately said vanilla. She smiled and began pulling out a few options, including one of the brand’s newer scents, Cap Camarat.

One whiff and I was done. It was warm, uplifting, and instantly felt like my spring scent. With Bloomingdale’s Friends & Family sale, the price came down, and the purchase came with a beautiful scarf (wrapped beautifully, by Olivia, around the bottle), a travel-size bottle, and several samples — a whole little fragrance wardrobe.

I left feeling lighter, brighter, and genuinely uplifted. This new scent is already my favorite for spring, and the whole experience reminded me how restorative a few hours to myself can be.
